this planet is becoming a very quiet place. the effect industrialization & capitalist development has had on the earth’s sounds is so depressing. Lastly there are anthrophonies: human-produced sounds like car traffic, construction, music. These are clearly where we got the idea for music from in the first place, as there are many correlations to soundscapes & and the particular rhythms in music made by people indigenous to said biomes all over the world. There are also geophonies: nonliving natural sounds like thunderstorms, wind, rivers, ocean waves. It’s an incredible way of measuring the health of an ecosystem, as healthy ones will have beautifully complex rhythms and many noise-making members, not unlike a symphony.
